Red Lips District: Elizabeth Arden Anniversary Lipstick Red Door Red

Confession: I’m not entirely sure what this lipstick is called, exactly. All I know is, it has a long name and I’m pretty sure you could switch up the “limited edition”, “anniversary”, and “red door red” words and you’d still find it on Google. SEO nightmare, though.

This came out more than a few years ago. I won this in a giveaway. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have even heard of this lipstick. After all, I’m not exactly the target demographic for Elizabeth Arden.

I will say this, though: it’s definitely the classiest looking lipstick tube I own.

It practically oozes old school glamour, don’t you think?

This was released as part of their 100-year anniversary back in 2010. It’s named after their iconic Red Door entrance on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The cap is embossed with their Red Door logo.

This lipstick is sheer, with tiny flecks of gold glitter. It’s more emollient than any of the other red lipsticks I own. You could probably get away with reapplying this without a mirror.

For me, this is a perfect day time red. It will disappear quickly if you eat or drink, though. The glitter particles also stick to the lips long after the color is gone.

I applied this over lip balm, and I had a bit of trouble getting it to go on evenly. Still, with enough lip smooshing, the color evens out . You could always blend it out with your finger for a more stained look, too.

While I don’t reach for this often, I do think it’s a lovely, fuss-free red that can be worn any day of the week, any time of day. I used it a lot during the holidays last year, actually. There’s just something about the red and the gold and the glitter! It’s Christmas! In August!

Coffee Sundays vol.2

coffee sundays v2

I’m really not sure where the week went. All of a sudden, it’s Sunday again, what??

1. What kind of music have you been listening to lately?

I’ve been feeling really down lately, so I created a playlist on Spotify called Rainy Day. Lots of sad acoustic guitar stuff. One of my favorites is a cover of The Beatles’ song “All My Loving” by The Well Pennies. Have a listen:

It’s such a beautiful rendition and it makes me cry. :( I originally heard it in Victoria’s Secret, of all places! It’s on a compilation album called Beatles Reimagined, and if you enjoyed this one, then you might want to check out the rest of the album:

2. What are your fashion pet peeves?

I hate hate HATE fake pockets. I find them infuriating and pointless. Jeggings with fake pockets? I’ll throw them down in a fury. Moto jacket with a zipper pull that opens to nothing? EFF WHYYY!! It’s even worse when the zipper is fake too! I just can’t stand fake and pointless embellishments. I want my clothes to be functional, thankyouverymuch.

3. Share with me something funny.

Like I said, I’ve been really sad and moody lately, so anything you can find on the internet to cheer me up will be much appreciated. Here’s my contribution:

Basically, this guy’s wife, after having a few drinks, tells him a really punny joke, and he animates it. It’s adorable and hilarious, and it gets funnier each time I watch it. Love.

P.S. Someone buy me the shirt, plskthx.

4. What are some of your favorite TV shows?

Criminal Minds! It’s finally streaming on Netflix, so I’ve started watching it from the beginning. I’ve also started rewatching Heroes on Netflix (I originally only got up to half of season 3; I intend to finish it this time!). Game of Thrones is also an addiction for me, and I’m halfway through season 3 and I hope I can catch up before season 5 starts. And I should probably finish up the latest season of Once Upon A Time, if only to find out what happened to Rumplestiltskin and ogle delicious Captain Hook. ;)

5. On that note, any celebrity crushes? Or fictional character crushes?

Kit Harrington from Game of Thrones. Le sighhh, he’s so handsome. Apparently he only started growing out his hair and beard when he was signed onto the show; before that, he was always clean cut! What have you been doing all your life, Kit??

He looks like a completely different person here:

kit harrington clean shaven

vs. This drool worthy Jimmy Choo ad.

kit-harington-jimmy-choo

Obviously I prefer my men scruffy. Lucky for me, Albert is Mediterranean and scruffy as all hell and perfect. :P

As far as fictional characters, I’m in love with John Bender from The Breakfast Club. Who isn’t?

Only 5 this time, because I don’t feel like coming up with another question.

Red Lips District: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Beso

I got this Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Beso as a free sample with a promotion code with my latest Sephora order. It was a red, white, or blue thing for the Fourth of July. I’d heard good things about this liquid lipstick in terms of longevity, so I thought I’d try this out over the white or blue thing that was being offered.

With my one MAC lipstick for scale. The full size tube is longer, like a lip gloss tube.

The formula is creamy, and ridiculously pigmented. It comes with a fuzzy applicator wand, but this formula is so fussy, I would never apply it with the wand from the tube directly.

It dries down to a beautiful matte finish. Completely matte, not a semi sheen like the OCC lip tar.

However, it’s a pain in the ass to apply, and it takes forever to get it perfect. With its high pigmentation and fussy formula, this is one unforgiving lipstick.

The color itself is stunning, but it’s also drying. It definitely stays on better than any of the other red lipsticks I have. However, it tends to flake off in patches as the day goes on. Reapplying is tricky as well, because it clings to any dry patches and it won’t layer nicely.

I paired it with a classic cat eye, because this one looks very old Hollywood 50s glamour to me, color and finish.

However, the formula is my least favorite. It’s tricky to apply, and really drying. Even though it comes with an applicator which means you could, in theory, take it on the go to reapply when it wears off, it’s such a high maintenance color and formulation. I doubt I’ll be reaching for this very much. At least it was free.

Red Lips District: Topshop lipstick Hazard

I have no idea where this week went. I really didn’t want to let an entire week go by, then bore you all with red lipstick again on the weekend, but it happened. I’m sorry.

This next lipstick, I picked up in London last year. The packaging is so cute. I love the typography.

topshop lipstick hazard 3

I don’t know what it is about this lipstick, but it makes me feel young and chic and quite the urbanite. The lines on the packaging are unpolished and the kind of girl who’d have this lipstick in her bag would be similarly effortlessly undone; a little bit messy, but ultra cool. She’d roll out of bed in the morning, throw her hair up in a messy bun, toss on a boyfriend shirt, jeans, and a pair of sunnies. #noteventrying

It swatches quite a bit brighter than the bullet would lead you to believe. For some reason, I think of this as more of a “daytime” red.

Here’s how it looks on me:

topshop lipstick hazard fotd

I took this picture this afternoon, trying to catch the last of the natural light that comes through the window. I don’t have foundation on. So, I guess I’m a little undone as well, but definitely not like the girl I described previously. In fact, this is the only picture I took in which I didn’t look absolutely miserable.

I’ll be honest with you guys: I’ve been having a really rough couple of days. A guy I know called me on Tuesday night and asked if I wanted to help out on a TV special that’s filming this week, so of course I said yes. The days are really long, with an early call time (I’ve been waking up at 4 am). Today I had the day off and I slept. so. much.

But it’s not just the physical exhaustion. I’m in a really awful place right now, mentally and emotionally. I thought I’d have news for the audit results by the end of this week, but I kept checking my email all day yesterday and nothing. There are now two weeks until the start of term, and I really don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m heartbroken.

Because of this, I know I haven’t been approaching this film job with the right attitude or mindset. It’s causing a bit of an emotional crisis for me. I don’t know if I should even continue pursuing a career in the film industry after all. I’m finding it hard to muster enthusiasm for just about anything.

What makes it worse is that the one person I want to talk to, who makes me feel marginally better, is halfway across the world, and it looks like it’s going to continue this way for an unspecified amount of time. Situation Normal: All Fucked Up.

Coffee Sundays

coffee sundays

Sunday is the best day to sit down with a cup of coffee and chat, don’t you think? I’ve been on this new domain for a few months now, and it only just dawned on me that I should start a series based on my blog name.

It’s pretty simple: every Sunday I’ll post 6 questions (I like the number 6 :P), and you guys answer in the comments. It’s like a virtual coffee break chat. It’ll be a good way for me to get to know you guys, and vice versa.

Without further ado, welcome to our first Coffee Sundays meeting!

1. Since this is a coffee break: coffee or tea? Espresso drinks, drip coffee, white tea, green tea?

I like both coffee and tea, but 9 times out of 10, I’ll go for coffee. If I’m ordering from a coffee shop and I have time to relax, I’ll order a plain latte. If I’m in a hurry, a regular drip coffee with room for cream. If I’m making it at home, I’ll use a French press and add a splash of cream. I don’t like my coffee to be sweet!

2. Do you have any pets?

I have a Tibetan Spaniel named Pocky. She’s 8 years old, and a spoiled, pretty princess. I love her to death. I previously had two tame lovebirds named Keiki and Mele. Keiki passed away in 2009, and Mele passed away in 2012. They were feisty, funny, and sweet. I still miss them.

3.Something that you’re really looking forward to?

I am looking forward to hearing the results of the audit on University of West London, so I’ll know whether or not I’ll be attending graduate school this fall. :S

4. Tell me how you got one of your scars.

The first scar I ever got was from running. I was in preschool or elementary school, and we were doing laps in a graveyard (no, really). I tripped over a mound of dirt and scraped my knee. I asked my teacher if I could sit out for the last lap, but she said “No, you’re almost done, just run one more lap.” So I did. When I came back around, she noticed that I was bleeding down my leg, and she freaked out. In my mind, I was like, I told you so.

5. What’s your favorite season?

Hawaii doesn’t really have seasons. It’s warm all year round. However, I love fall fashion and cold weather and layering clothes and accessories like scarves and hats, so probably fall.

6. Describe your ideal Sunday morning.

Wake up around 10, make coffee, and have a casual brunch, either at home (something simple like scrambled eggs and toast) or at an inexpensive breakfast place. I’d order eggs Benedict. Or waffles. And orange juice. And probably more coffee.

Your turn! Happy Sunday!

P.S. That’s an affogato (it means “drowned” in Italian, and it’s espresso with a scoop of ice cream) in the picture above. The journals were a 3-pack that I picked up at Target on clearance for $6.98! Terabyte has blank pages, Megabyte has lined pages, and Kilobyte has graph lined pages. They’re so cute and cheeky. :3
