Red hair color upkeep with Henné Colouring Creams

henne colouring creams 2

When I left Hawaii five months ago, my hair was red. It’s a notoriously difficult color to upkeep, especially if you have to lift your natural color first (like I did); just blink at it the wrong way and it turns brassy. Without my beloved stylist, Mel, and unwilling to make the effort to find a stylist here in London, I turned to DIY to refresh my color during the six months I’m here.

I’d already had the idea of using henna to refresh the red: it’s well known for being a damage-free way to color your hair. It’s a plant based dye that sits on top of your cuticle instead of penetrating it. In other words, it stains your hair and blends in with your existing color versus going into the cuticle and replacing the color. Depending on which type of henna you use, it can last anywhere from two to six washes.

The one downside to pure powder or even brick type henna (a la LUSH), is that it gets really messy. We have a tiny bathroom with crappy lighting, so I didn’t want to take that chance and cause a huge disaster. After reading a few reviews on Amazon, I decided to go with these Henné Color Colouring Creams in three colors: Mahogany, Auburn, and Copper.

FOTD: I Feel Like A Million Dollars

fotd i feel like a million dollars day

I finally got to play around a bit with the pieces I picked up from the Rosie for Autograph makeup collection. Since it’s still new, and I’ve been getting the most traffic from those search words ;) here’s a day-to-night FOTD!

I know my swatches makes it seem like the eyeshadows aren’t hyper pigmented, but they’re not slackers either. I’d say they’re about medium pigmentation. They build and blend easily, and I love how beautifully they reflect light.

Oh yeah. That KStew.

The next bunch of FOTD will be backlogged ones, since I want to clear out my numerous folders. Early spring cleaning, you know?

I watched this YouTube tutorial by the lovely Lisa Eldridge, and since it’s so simple to recreate, I went for it:

Since I didn’t have an unscented lip gloss or Vaseline equivalent, I think I used the Hourglass primer? I recently bought a small tub of generic petroleum jelly, so I’m going to try this trick again today (or yesterday, since this is going up tomorrow… Wibbly wobbly timey wimey!)

My hair was dirty and greasy in this picture, but I think it adds to the rock ‘n’ roll vibe, no? These kinds of undone looks are right up my alley, since I look like I’m falling apart at any given time, ha. But seriously, I love these grunge-y, lived-in makeup looks.

December 2015 and January 2016 empties

Better late than never! First, December’s empties.

dec 2015 empties

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in 30 Beige – Finally used this sample. It was a pretty close match, if a tad dark. I used it in my last post, here.

Red Cherry false lashes – I reused these a few times. I find cutting full strip lashes in half, or even thirds, makes them way easier to apply than one long strip. I have tiny, weirdly shaped eyes. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.

KVD Lucifer, Leather – I never reached for these, and they were taking up space in my small Z Palette.

Smashbox Muse biscuit – Losing the Smashbox shadow was tough. I was admiring how much pan was visible, and as I moved to put the Z Palette down, I accidentally whacked it against the coffee table. It shattered, along with my heart.

dec 2015 empties smashbox

It was such a good lid shade. It matched my skin tone perfectly, and it had the barest hint of satin-y sheen. I used it all over my lid, as well as for blending out other colors. It came from a limited edition Smashbox palette, and to my knowledge, they don’t have this color in a single.

I’m planning on going to KIKO to see if I can find something similar, though. ;)

dec 2015 empties 2

The Body Shop Hemp hand protector, 30 mL and 100 mL – Long standing favorites. I even got Albert hooked on it, ha.

The Body Shop Aloe Protective Serum – This was nice and lightweight. I can’t say for certain whether or not it did anything for my face.

Random mini hand and face wipes – I used them as makeup removers when traveling.

The Body Shop Cocoa Butter lip care stick – I didn’t even know this was close to finishing, but one day it wouldn’t twist up anymore! I bought it in April of last year, so I finished it in less than a year. Impressive.

Tocca Simone – I really like this perfume. It’s light and summery. I’m thinking about picking up a bottle one day.

Maison Martin Margiela REPLICA Lazy Sunday Morning – LOVE this one. I already picked up a rollerball, now that they do rollerballs, thank jeebus. The full size one is huge, and $125. O_O

January empties!

jan 2016 empties

Henné Color coloring creme – Auburn, Copper, Mahogany – I wanted to try henna as a color upkeep for my red hair, but I didn’t want to deal with the messy powder stuff. These cream color things worked nicely. I mixed all three together, and I managed to stretch out the bottles to last for four applications! I’ll do a post on them soon.

The Body Shop body butter in Honeymania – This was a gift with purchase promotion that I wasn’t even aware of. My sister and I went to The Body Shop when I first got to London to stock up on things and we spent over £50, so they gave us a set which included this body butter, and the matching bubble bath. We have a shower stall here, so I gave the bubble bath to Jackie to take back to the States. The scent is okay, not one I would have picked out for myself, but surprisingly I didn’t hate it. Ha.

jan 2016 empties 2

e.l.f. clear mascara – This was clearly way past due to be thrown away, but I only just found a cheap clear mascara to replace it.

Laura Mercier Flawless Fluide – I actually had to Google this to find out which brand it is. The color was too dark, so I had to sheer it out a lot, and use bronzer on my neck. I have a FOTD lined up using this.

Tory Burch perfume – This was just okay. The sales associate at Sephora suggested this after I asked for a sample of Lazy Sunday Morning and kindly gave me a sample of this as well.

Maison Martin Margiela REPLICA Beach Walk – Also another favorite. Also have the rollerball in this.

I had forgotten how much I like doing empties posts! It makes me feel like I’m actually using the things in my stash, because there’s visual proof. I didn’t realize it, but I hadn’t done an empties post at all during 2015. So, here’s to downsizing in 2016!

FOTD: Suede

fotd suede

I thought I’d sneak in a FOTD between the inventory posts and upcoming empties post. Also, I’m scheduling this to go up on Valentine’s Day, so a little inspiration?

I used my magazine sample of Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua for this look. I really loved the formula. It was lightweight, yet covered beautifully without looking like a mask. However, I don’t think Chanel is considered cruelty-free*, so unfortunately I won’t be buying a full size of this foundation.

*I am not a super strict, cruelty-free only blogger. I try as much as I can to buy only cruelty-free, but if I happen to purchase and/or already own something from a company that lies in the gray area, or outright NOT CF, I don’t beat myself up about it.

It’s quite a tonal look, almost matchy-matchy between the eyes, cheeks, and lips. I really like how it came out, though. Also, I skipped eyeliner, which I think adds to the overall softness of it.

Just realized that this is the first FOTD I’ve posted that I’ve actually done while here in London. The others were backlogged pictures. Hooray! And I go home in a month! Womp womp.
