I know that’s a sh*t ton of makeup… but it’s for prom, right? ;)

I need to take a moment to rave about Urban Decay Moondust eyeshadow in Solstice. It’s a super sparkly duochrome shade, with a brownish red undertone and a green sparkly shift. IT’S SO EFFIN’ PRETTY. It transforms this otherwise muted, pretty look into something eye-catching without being too loud.

I took inspiration for this look from Emily of In fact, her FOTD using Solstice is what spurred me to purchase it during the VIB sale. My pictures don’t pick up the sparkles nearly as well as hers do, so definitely check out her post!

Disclaimer: I did not look nearly this polished for my own proms. There were one or two years I didn’t wear a stitch of makeup, and maybe my senior year I wore a shimmery white eyeshadow (yep) and a tinted lip gloss? I was a late bloomer, makeup-wise.

If I were to go to a prom now with this look, I would add a winged liner and some falsies to the eyes. Of course, it would also depend on what color my dress would be. I’m so out of touch with formal wear that I have no idea what this hypothetical dress would look like.

What did you wear to prom? Did you do your own makeup or go to a counter? What would you wear to prom now?

Mani Monday: Essie Maximillian Strasse Her

Another posting anomaly: I’m actually still wearing this. Here’s Essie Maximillian Strasse Her!

I’ve had this polish for a couple years now. It was released in Spring 2013 as part of the Madison Ave-Hue collection, so it’s been around for awhile. Not sure if it’s still available, though.

Essie Maximillian Strasse Her has a strange name. All the polishes in the collection were named after famous shopping districts around the world. This one is named after Maximillianstraße in Munich, Germany, which apparently “has the distinction of the highest retail rents in Germany.” It’s a cool toned, greyish green color. I love muted, dusty colors like this.

I’m currently purging a lot of my old makeup and nail polish, and I’m happy to say that this one made the cut. I’m letting go of a very similarly colored one called Parka Perfect, which is a little more blue than Maximillian Strasse Her. Parka Perfect also has subtle shimmer running through it, while this one is a creme. I did a comparison post on my old blog, but I can’t seem to find the pictures now.

I know my nail polish application is a little slapdash, but I’ve given up on perfection awhile ago. Right after I put on a quick-dry top coat, I forgot about it and did normal things with my hands and ended up trashing my nails almost immediately. Smudges and sheet marks followed. Oops.

This isn’t going to be a coherent, cohesive, comprehensive post. At all. You have been warned.

  • Tweexy Nail Polish Holder – I first saw this on Hautelook earlier this week. All I can say is wtf? I didn’t even know there was a market for this!

I don’t even know.

  • On a related note, I just replied to a Craigslist ad for an interior design intern. I’m probably not qualified, but at least I tried. The worst they can do is reply and say no.
  • I just did a major purge of makeup, mostly eyeshadows and nail polish. I’m letting go of a lot of pretty colors, some barely used. It does seem like a waste, but it’s also not serving me by sitting in a drawer year after year. I think I’ll feel much better once I get rid of them, and then I can focus on the products that I truly enjoy.
  • I finally colored over my awful orange hair. Krystal came over to help me out. It’s now a very deep, dark blueish purple. I think it looks more blue than purple, honestly. I mixed Manic Panic’s After Midnight with Purple Haze and a tiny bit of Fuschia Shock. Here’s a picture from my Instagram:

I may do a post on it, but I can’t seem to get color accurate pictures. Just know that it no longer looks like barf. *yay*

  • I’m going to attempt the Pomodoro Technique again. So far I’ve been timing my reading and working on assignments in 20 minute blocks, but I’d like to use the technique more effectively. I think it would help with my blog, too!

That’s it for this week, friends. Have a good Sunday!

UK Haul, Part 3: KIKO Milano

kiko milano haul

Hello and welcome back to this very consistently updated blog! Albert is back in London and I took a week and a half (ish) to sort out my life, goals, etc. I somewhat succeeded so now I’m ready to dive back into blogging!

Since arriving back in the US, I completely fell off the “downsize all the makeup things!” wagon, especially with the Sephora sale earlier this month. I indulged a bit, and although I still find myself constantly itching to buy new things, I think I exercised a good deal of self-control.

However, I have yet to make any significant dent in my considerable makeup stash, so I am OFFICIALLY going on a no-buy. It’s going to be tough, but after sorting through my pictures that I’ve already taken for the blog, I’ve come to the realization that I have a shit ton of new stuff to play with, so I really ought to take the time to get to know them before drooling over the latest releases.

But before I get into my recent US hauls, I have to finish going over the things I bought across the pond (and a half. Plus a continent.)

KIKO Milano has been getting a lot of attention lately, especially from European bloggers. They’re now available in the US, although it’s limited to a few stores on the mainland as well as online. Not surprisingly, they don’t ship to Alaska or Hawaii. I’m telling you, we’re the neglected step-children of the United States.

Back in Hawaii

Hey friends. I know I’ve been quiet for the past two weeks. I arrived back in Honolulu on Friday, 25 March with Albert.

We’ve been taking it easy here, even staying on a farm through Air BnB over the weekend — so relaxing! Unfortunately, Albert leaves tonight. The sun is setting on our six uninterrupted months together and they flew by way too fast.

Anyway, I’ve updated the reading and writing settings to reflect Hawaiian Standard Time, if anyone cares about why my posts be going up at a different time now.

Hope you’ve all been well! To keep this post beauty related, how many of you are picking things up during the Sephora spring sale? 15% off for VIB Rouge (ROUGENOTE) and VIB (VIBNOTE) and 10% for BI (BINOTE). Ends 12 April for BI, 13 April for VIB/Rouge.

I’ve demonstrated remarkable restraint and only picked up an eyebrow brush, a Beauty Blender, a mini coffret fragrance trio, and an Urban Decay Moondust eyeshadow in Solstice because sparkles. I’m eyeing a few more things (of course), and I plan to go in-store on Sunday to pick up a concealer and a liquid lipstick for a friend, so fingers crossed that I will maintain my self-control!
