FOTD: Halloween 2016

fotd-halloween-2016

So! It’s Halloween. I did a thing on my face.

This was my first time using water-activated face paint. I bought it at Target. I was surprised to see it’s made by WolfeFX cosmetics, a well-known theatre and stage makeup brand. It was only $2, so I figured it’d be a cheap experiment.

And, err… This happened. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be exactly. Some kind of sloppy broken doll look, maybe?

The Good

I do like how the tiny, doll-shaped lips turned out, though. Maybe a bit smaller on the lower lip would be better. Took a lot of finagling with a Stila liquid lipstick that I never use. I also found the face paint to be relatively easy to use, and blend.

The Bad

The red blush, however, refused to blend. I tried begging and pleading, even bribing. But once it went on, it refused to budge. Stubborn bugger. I also don’t like the sloppy line work for the cracks. I should have used a finer brush.

The Ugly

Dem brows, tho.

In all seriousness, I think the overall impact of this look would have improved had I bothered to do something with my hair. And maybe a neutral backdrop so you don’t have to see my living room behind me, ha. The white face paint should have continued down my neck as well; the floating head effect is quite distracting otherwise!

I’d like to try this again with my usual face color, and use the white face paint as an accent to make the cracks look more realistic. Also, more gray shading!

In conclusion, I know this isn’t the best Halloween makeup out there. It isn’t even the best that I could have done. But it was getting late and I was rushing to get it done so I could take pictures and wipe it all off before walking the dog this afternoon, ha.

If you’re at all curious what products I’ve used to create this weird thing on my face:

Face

Rouge Bunny Rouge Milk Aquarelle – Chestnut Milk Parfait (yep, I used foundation and then covered it up with white face paint. Superfluous step)
WolfeFX Water Activated Makeup – White
Sleek MakeUP Ultra Mattes v2 – Pillow Talk
e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black
NYX blush – Red
I Heart Makeup Blushing Hearts highlighter – Goddess of Faith

Brows

e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black

Eyes

e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black
Sleek MakeUP Ultra Mattes v2 – Noir, Thunder

Lips

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick – Beso

This is going up super late, at 8PM HST! It’ll be November 1st by the time anyone reads this. So: I hope you’ve all had a fun Halloween! I’m staying in tonight because I’m boring. Also, I have no similarly unemployed friends who could go out on a Monday night. But mostly, I’m boring.

FOTD: Jenn Ne Sais Quoi

I feel a bit sheepish posting this FOTD, because most of the products are no longer available. Also, I’m not sure why it looks like there’s a hint of a sneer on my face. Maybe my smile lines are getting deeper with age. Eep.

I made my first ColourPop order a couple of months ago, because I got an email from them stating that they’d be discontinuing the Jenn Im collaboration, Jenn Ne Sais Quoi. While I don’t actually follow Jenn Im, the colors from the eyeshadow quad looked so perfect, and umm, it literally had my name on it. I also bought the Lippie Stix in Jenneration X.

For the sake of brevity, I’ll do a separate post with swatches on my ColourPop stuff, as well as my thoughts on them. Otherwise this post will get way too long and boring, especially because no one really wants to read about products that are no longer available.

The look ended up being quite tonal, with orange-y reds on the lids, lips, and a hint on the cheeks. Orange harmonizes quite well on my skin tone!

Sorry for the stupid pose, but this angle shows off the cheek color really well. It’s Soap & Glory’s Peach Party, a very shimmery peachy blush. I hardly reach for it because it’s easy to over apply, but the extra effort it requires is definitely worth it.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade – Medium Brown

The Body Shop Smoky 2 in 1 Gel Liner & Brow Definer – Brown
Soap & Glory – Thick & Fast mascara

Overall, I loved how well this look turned out. The general “rule” out there regarding bright makeup colors is to use it on one feature at a time. I think this disproves that rule! Eyes, lips, and cheeks all have noticeable color, but in varying degrees of intensity. I think this is a great way to wear a colorful look without looking clownish or too “done.”

What’s in my travel makeup bag? September 2016

I’m back!!

Well, I’ve been home for almost three weeks now, but as I am practically incapable of behaving like a functioning adult, I am only getting around to reviving my poor blog now-ish. Heh.

I was away from my makeup stash for most of the month of September. First, I went on a trip to Asia with my dad. I came back to Hawaii for a few days and stayed at my uncle’s place while waiting for our bathroom renovation to wrap up. Then, I spent a weekend in Las Vegas for my cousin’s wedding. When we finally moved back in, it took awhile to sort our lives back in order. It’s still not 100% sorted out, but whose life really is, amirite?

Anyway! This post is on what was in my travel makeup bag that I used for the past month. Let’s see what made the cut.
