Throwback Thursday: OPI x Clark+Kensington swatches

The OPI x Clark+Kensington nail polish collection came out nearly two years ago. I took pictures at the time and never got around to putting a post together until now. So I guess it’s only fitting that it’s labeled as a “throwback Thursday” post (or, “even more evidence that Jen has a hard time following through.”)

ACE Hardware was the last place I expected to find things to paint my nails with. Things to paint my walls with, sure. But nail polish?

This collection cleverly combined my budding interest in interior design with my already existing love for nail polish. This little set was sitting up at the register, alongside three style cards feature interiors with coordinating nail polish colors. I was going through a rough time, so I bought this as a little pick me up.

The colors in this mini set include Can’t Find My Czechbook, I Eat Mainely Lobster, and My Vampire is Buff.

Side note: how does one get a job with a nail polish company as a namer? It looks like so much pun! *ba-dum TISH!*

Mani Monday: Essie Maximillian Strasse Her

essie maximillian strasse her

Another posting anomaly: I’m actually still wearing this. Here’s Essie Maximillian Strasse Her!

I’ve had this polish for a couple years now. It was released in Spring 2013 as part of the Madison Ave-Hue collection, so it’s been around for awhile. Not sure if it’s still available, though.

Essie Maximillian Strasse Her has a strange name. All the polishes in the collection were named after famous shopping districts around the world. This one is named after Maximillianstraße in Munich, Germany, which apparently “has the distinction of the highest retail rents in Germany.” It’s a cool toned, greyish green color. I love muted, dusty colors like this.

I’m currently purging a lot of my old makeup and nail polish, and I’m happy to say that this one made the cut. I’m letting go of a very similarly colored one called Parka Perfect, which is a little more blue than Maximillian Strasse Her. Parka Perfect also has subtle shimmer running through it, while this one is a creme. I did a comparison post on my old blog, but I can’t seem to find the pictures now.

I know my nail polish application is a little slapdash, but I’ve given up on perfection awhile ago. Right after I put on a quick-dry top coat, I forgot about it and did normal things with my hands and ended up trashing my nails almost immediately. Smudges and sheet marks followed. Oops.

Mani Monday: butter LONDON Champers

butter london champers

A couple weeks ago, I went to TK Maxx with the intent of buying shirts for running. Of course, I had to make a stop in the beauty section. I found this lone bottle of butter LONDON Champers in an otherwise decimated nail polish section. Despite being quite pricy, butter LONDON is one of my favorite nail polish brands and I always try to get them on sale (or with my former Macy’s employee discount… those were the days!)

butter LONDON Champers is described as an “opaque rose gold shimmer.” To me, it’s not quite rosy enough to be rose gold. Additionally, upon removal, there was quite a bit of microglitter which made the process extra messy. It also chipped VERY quickly on me. Keep in mind that all nail polishes across the board chip rather quickly on me, but this one seemed almost repelled by my nail beds.

Lastly, I don’t think the color is very flattering on my skin tone. I noticed that it made the skin around my nails look a bit red. This might have been due to the fact that my hair color was still bleeding out while washing.

However, when I first pulled it out to swatch, I thought it looked all too familiar to another gold shimmer polish I already have, Sinful Colors Supernova. I decided to do a quick comparison by wearing butter LONDON Champers on my left hand, and Sinful Colors Supernova on my right.

In the bottle, butter LONDON Champers looks has more red in it. I should compare it to Essie Penny Talk as well. Additionally, the shimmer in Sinful Colors Supernova is more intense.

Here’s Sinful Colors Supernova under the same lighting conditions. It looks so much more flattering on me than Champers. It’s also much cheaper, about $2 at Walmart vs. £4.99 at TK Maxx. Also, I thought Supernova chipped on me quickly, but it actually held on longer than butter LONDON did!! What gives?

I’ll give this polish a try once my hair stops bleeding (that sounds super gross), but I may end up giving it away. The formula is great, but the color doesn’t suit me. Boo.

“New year, new me”

… lol, jk.

So, apparently it’s been a month since I last posted. I had no idea. Oops.

But that’s neither here nor there now, so hello 2016! We’re two weeks in already, but if you’ve been following my blog for awhile now, you’ll know that’s just how I roll.

My friend Krystal visited me over the Christmas holidays. I didn’t manage to get a few posts scheduled (big surprise), so that explains my silence for the first two weeks, at least.

Then, as the new year rolled in, I started my period for the first time in months. I’m on a new birth control and it’s taking my body awhile to get adjusted. With my hormones completely out of whack, I felt straight up psychotic for a few days. I’m talking sobbing uncontrollably in the middle of the night, mood swings like you wouldn’t believe, and general feeling sorry for myself.

But now that I’m more or less back to normal and level-headed, I figured it’s high time to get back to my little blog.

While I’m not big on making New Year’s Resolutions, I have started a few new habits this year that I’m keen to keep up. This is going to be a long post, so I’ll stick a cut tag in here!

Mani Monday: Holiday sparkles!

holiday mani

Remember when I said I didn’t bring any glitter nail polish with me? Apparently I lied. When I dumped out the makeup bag holding all my polishes, I found China Glaze Razzle Me, Dazzle Me.

I immediately threw together a holiday-esque mani. I only brought about seven bottles of polish, and half of them are some variation of gray, so I don’t have a whole lot of combinations to work with. I’ll probably start doing one color manis, and stop posting about them. I never religiously participated in Mani Monday, anyway.

But yay, sparkles.
