Currently Coveting: December 2015

It’s the holiday season! That means shiny new baubles for makeup magpies like myself to get all grabby hands over!

However, nowadays I am committed to buying less things and getting rid of crap I already have but don’t use. I just did an inventory of all the makeup I brought to London, and considering how often I’ve posted looks using said makeup (never), I really brought too much.

Although it seems counterintuitive to write a post about new things I want that I obviously don’t need, I find it actually helps me to see the patterns I fall into. Usually, if I list it down and leave it alone for awhile, I come back later and find that the overwhelming urge to buy whatever it is I thought I couldn’t live without, has disappeared.

  • Zoeva brushes

zoeva brushes

There’s been a lot of buzz over these brushes, and I’ve narrowed it down to these two that I really want: the rose gold cheek brush, and the brow brush. I currently use the MAC 266 for my eyebrows, but it’s not as sharp as I’d like it to be. Of course, I don’t need the blush brush, but LOOK AT IT.

I’ve had these two in my cart on but currently the brow brush is out of stock.

  • Makeup Geek eyeshadows

Beauty Bay has also recently started stocking Makeup Geek eyeshadows! I know I’m late to the party on these, but I never wanted to make a big enough order on the Makeup Geek website to justify the (nominal) shipping charge. I’m irrationally stingy.

Since they’re super popular, they’ve been going in and out of stock on Beauty Bay. Early this morning, all systems were go, but it looks like everything (?!) is out of stock now. Another “oh well.” I take it as a mixed blessing, because otherwise I’d be spending money that I don’t have.

Lastly, since the stock pictures of the eyeshadows are rather bland, here are some swatches from Viola of Killer Colours:

These are from this post about her Makeup Geek eyeshadows. Do check her blog out, but be warned: I have bought so many things based off swatches and reviews on her site. It doesn’t help that she’s drop dead gorgeous and many products look amazing on her. I, of course, look nothing like her. But whatever. She’s super cool and I totally have a girlcrush on her.

  • Phee’s Makeup Shop Palette + Trio

Another lemming created by Viola. Bundle sets are always a better value, and with 25% off your first order if you sign up for her newsletter, this comes down to £18.75 (about $28.15 USD). Honestly, I would get it without the palette (£11.63, or $17.46), since I have a couple empty Z palettes sitting at home. I only brought one small one with me, though, and it has zero space for more makeup. What to do??

  • Manic Panic Semi-Permanent Hair Color Cream

Without my dear hairstylist Mel, my red hair is fading slowly into a brassy coppery orange. Not cute. I bought three henna coloring creams from Amazon in Auburn, Copper, and Mahogany. It actually worked pretty well to refresh the color, but now I’m getting a bit bored with red. Since I already have a lightened base and existing color, I was thinking about buying one (or both) of these to achieve a wine reddish purple. I have to use up the henna ones first, though.

By the way, fuchsia is spelled wrong. It’s really bothering me, but that’s what the product is called, so I’m going to let it go. O_o

  • Everlane Modern Zip Backpack

Ha, the stock picture wasn’t against a white background. Whatever!

I was recently quite annoyed with Everlane, as my last order took well over a month to get to Hawaii. I had ordered from them before, and it never took that long. I was afraid it got lost somewhere. Finally, it eventually arrived, but after I had already left for New York. My friend Krystal will be visiting me in a couple weeks, and she’s kind enough to bring it with her for me.

After emailing Everlane and expressing my disbelief at how long the order took, they added $15 credit to my account. I’m still rather wary about ordering from them again, but I do love their products so much. This backpack is currently out of stock anyway, so at least I don’t have to wrestle with that decision for awhile yet.

What’s on your wish list? I also want a Christmas advent calendar, but they’re all a bit expensive, and I really don’t want more random things. I think I just want the joy of opening a little box of something cute and tiny, every day until Christmas. Sigh.

Howdy. I’m in the middle of an 11-days-in-a-row + 8-days-in-a-row work stretch, so I probably won’t be posting much until I get a day off. However, since I don’t start until late today, I’m able to squeeze in a bit of time for a frivolous post! (Although, let’s be honest, beauty blogging as a whole is pretty frivolous.)

Things I currently have grabby hands for:

1. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Gash gash lipstick images

Images from

As if I need another red lipstick. This one is described as “deep red with tonal shimmer.” I’m not into shimmery lipsticks, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to give this one a try. It’s an exclusive. I think that’s probably the only reason I want it.

2. Urban Decay Afterglow Blush in Bittersweet bittersweet blush images

I’m a blush fiend. This is a purple blush. PURPLE BLUSH. I’ve never worn purple blush before. Instant lust.

3. Fishs Eddy Good Morning Mug good morning mug

Image from

This mug needs to be in my life. I originally saw this on, and I immediately went looking for it. I was all set to order it, but it turns out it’s one of those websites that refuses to acknowledge that Alaska and Hawaii are part of the United States. I understand that a lot of companies don’t want to ship outside of the contiguous US, or even charge extra because it has to be shipped via air vs. ground. But I can’t even enter my billing information. I can’t order and pay for it, and send it to somewhere in the lucky 48 states. I’M SO ANNOYED.

However, they do have a brick-and-mortar store in Brooklyn. I’ll be in New York in September for a cousin’s wedding, so I will hunt it down then. MUST. OWN.

4. The Blend Custom Fragrance Blending Kit

These are pure fragrance oils designed to be mixed together to create a new fragrance. I came across this a couple days ago in my local Sephora. It comes with a little “recipe” book with suggestions on different mixes, or you could create your own. It’s expensive, $150, but considering how many different perfumes I have, I doubt I’d burn through these very quickly. But I have no room to store more perfumes, so this one will probably remain on my wish list forever, with no intention to buy it. Sigh.

5. Bésame Cosmetics Classic Color Lipstick in Red Velvet 1946

Yes, another red lipstick. But it’s Hayley Atwell’s Agent Carter’s lipstick.

I can actually check this one off the list, though. I started writing this post last week, and since then I’ve already ordered and received this beauty from Sephora. Hayley Atwell’s tweet caused quite a flurry in the beauty world, and I was so excited when I saw Bésame’s lipsticks were finally available at Sephora, along with a couple of their brightening powders.

And now a question I’ll pose to my army of probably two readers: what’s currently on your most wanted list?

Currently Coveting: August 2014

I like to keep a running list of beauty items I want. I don’t have a lot of extra money right now (or ever, really), so I find it useful to keep a list of things I have my eye on, so I can read reviews and thoroughly research them. It also gives me time to really think about why I want it and if I can justify it. Most of the time, they’re just passing urges and if I hold off on it long enough, I can usually cross it off my list without buying it.

Here’s what I’m currently drooling over.

1. Zoeva Rose Golden Luxury Setzoeva rose-golden-luxury-set

I saw this last night on, and it zoomed to the top of my wish list in record time. It’s to-die-for pretty and I WANTS IT. It’s $78 before taxes and shipping to the States, which makes it an expensive single item… but divided among 8 beautiful brushes and a cute pouch, it’s really not that bad. (Look at me, trying to convince myself that it’s okay to want it.) Do I need new brushes? Pfft, no. Can I even afford these right now? Definitely not. But here I am, writing a frivolous blog post about them anyway.

2. LORAC Pro palette

I’ve been hemming and hawing over whether or not to purchase this for months on end, because I really don’t need another neutral palette. However, the color selection is absolutely perfect and exactly what I’m looking for in a one-and-done palette. I appreciate that there’s an even mix of shimmer and matte colors; it’s the one downfall of the Naked palettes, and the reason why I’ve finally decided NOT to get the Naked2. I’m still a bit iffy because LORAC is rather vague about their cruelty-free status. I’m definitely not the strictest person when it comes to cruelty-free products, but I do what I can, and I like to be informed about my purchases. Sooo… This one is still up in the air.

3. Maison Martin Margiela ‘Replica’ Lazy Sunday Morning

You guys. This perfume was made for me. “Lazy Sunday Morning”? It’s me, in a bottle. I’m rubbish at describing scents, but the description of “soft skin and bed linen” fits perfectly. Unfortunately, it’s very pricey, $125 for 3.4 oz., and this is the only size they sell. I wish they’d make a 1 oz. size and price it accordingly, at maybe $75? In any case, this will be something I’ll gift myself when I accomplish something big, like finishing graduate school.

4. Sam Edelman Petty booties

I’m a bit late to the party for this one. These lovely, versatile ankle boots were all over Instagram last fall, and it’s easy to see why. They’re gorgeous, stylish, and functional all at once. I actually found a pair of brown leather ones at Nordstrom Rack a couple months ago, but I decided to pass because I really want these putty colored suede ones instead. It’s getting harder to find my size (I wear a 7), but I still haven’t made the plunge yet. Vacillating is what I do best, apparently.

5. Essie Urban Jungle

This gorgeous off white polish is from Essie’s Summer 2014 collection. Link goes to The Daily Varnish’s swatches (where I saw it first and where the lemming began). I would get so much use out of this. Sigh.

6. Milani Baked Powder Blush in Luminoso

This has been all over the beauty blogosphere for… ever. Seriously, just look at how many people have swatched and reviewed this. Of course I’d heard about it. It’s touted as universally flattering, relatively accessible (depending where you live), and cheap. But I didn’t pay much attention because I already have tons of blush that I will probably never finish in my lifetime. However, the final straw came when I read this post on Nouveau Cheap, followed by this one on Beauty Reductionista… on the same night. Okay, ladies. You’ve convinced me. This is how lemmings are born, people.

What’s are you currently coveting? Do tell!

P.S. There are two hurricanes on their way to Hawaii right now. I live on the island of Oahu, so we won’t feel the effects quite as badly as the Big Island (I think). However, convenience stores are currently sold out of bottled water, and my family and I have yet to stock up on some. We’ve prepared enough water for cooking and sanitation purposes, but the hunt for bottled drinking water continues! Positive thoughts for the safety of the people of state of Hawaii are welcome. :)
