April and May 2017 empties

Seeing as we’re already halfway through June, I’d better get these up now-ish.

This will most likely be rambly and boring, so feel free to click away. *shrugs*

April empties

e.l.f. Shine Eraser blotting papers – I could have sworn there used to be 50 sheets per pack, but now there are only 30?? As a result, I’m going through these faster than before. Also, now that it’s summer, I’ve been using 3 sheets a day.

Nature Republic Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Collagen Solution – I like these gel masks more than paper ones. They feel more substantial and soothing. I enjoyed this one and have one more that I need to use before I leave!

Jouer lip gloss in Sunset – Just tired of this one. I don’t use lip gloss much anymore, and I have no feelings one way or another about this.

Yes to Carrots Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 – It’s okay. I know there are better spf moisturizers out there, but I’m kinda cheap when it comes to skincare. Mostly because skincare ingredients etc. intimidate me.

The Body Shop Frosted Cranberry eau de toilette – It’s a sweet, one-note fragrance. I liked it, but I bought it only because I used to work there and needed to wear a company fragrance.

The Body Shop Moisture Foundation in 05 – FINALLY DONE WITH THIS MOTHERFUCKER. This foundation just wouldn’t die and I started to really resent it. It’s been discontinued, but I wouldn’t repurchase it if it were still being sold. It wore horribly throughout the day, looked greasy, and clung to dry patches. Blech.

The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector – HG status. I will forever repurchase this hand cream. Again, the scent is not for everyone, but it is the best hand cream for my perpetually thirsty paws.

Project Pan 2017

There’s been a marked increase in the number of hits on my Project Pan 2016 post. This makes a lot of sense: It’s January, and a lot of us are feeling the pinch on our wallets from holiday spending. It’s also high time for making New Year’s resolutions. Why not resolve to use what you have, and be more discerning about what you buy?

Last year

Looking back on what I had resolved to use up, it’s easy to feel a bit defeated. Here are all the things I wanted to use up by the end of 2016 (I wrote this post in May):

Makeup/color cosmetics

I’ve managed to use up the BECCA powder, and the Hourglass primer. The NARS blush crumbled out of the pan. I did end up purchasing a Deep Throat/Laguna duo to replace it.

The Benefit Hoola bronzer now has a sizable pan showing, and the Urban Decay eyeliner in Zero is now down to a tiny little nub.

On the other hand, the Make Up For Ever powder seems bottomless. I use it daily to set my makeup. However, it’s such a huge jar, and I use so little of it every time. I doubt I’ll finish it by the end of this year.

Miscellaneous beauty things

I’ve finished The Body Shop’s Aloe body butter. The peppermint leg gel and the Oils of Life facial oil are both nearly done. I gave the cuticle oil to my mom and am currently working on a CND Solar Oil instead. Barely used the Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator and the lip scrub.

This year

The only way to successfully use things up in their entirety is to consistently use them everyday.

I know, that seems like such an obvious statement, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll find it hard to stick to using a small percentage of your large stash, day in and day out. To combat this, I keep other items in rotation to break up the monotony. Also, as a wannabe beauty blogger, I do have to come up with different FOTDs from time to time, if only to prove to myself that I *can* create different looks.

So, here’s what I plan to use up this year!

FOTD: Trickery

fotd trickery

I like weird lipsticks. However, I don’t actually have the guts to wear it outside of the house.

Before I left The Body Shop, I made one last order on the L’Oreal employee website. I was sorely tempted to buy all of the NYX Wicked Lippies, but I restricted myself to one. Trickery is a bizarre-looking olive green. I dig it.

I paired it with a blown-out purple eye. Lately, I’ve been favoring the tulip placement; I think it works well for my eye shape and size. In a nutshell, the darkest parts are the inner and outer corners, and the middle is the lightest.

The eyes and lips work together so well here, in my humble opinion! It’s very editorial and almost alien. The only thing I don’t like is the blush. To me, these colors call for a very sculpted look, and if I were to do it again, I would opt for a strong contour and a no blush. Instead, the touch of pink looks out of place here.

FOTD: Hyped

fotd hyped 2

Here’s a look I did using products that are quite hyped up and talked about in the beauty blogosphere.

I find it hard not to get swept up by all the excitement and rave reviews surrounding new releases and cult favorites. It’s easy to rationalize an impulse purchase and tell yourself you “need” it because Everyone Else loves and swears by it!

However, I’ve learned to be more discerning with both my purchases, and trusting reviews. After all, what works for one blogger/reviewer, may not work for me (or you). I think it comes down to knowing what kinds of makeup looks you like to wear, what colors look good on you, and which formulas you prefer. It’s a long, confusing, and often expensive process! But it’s also fun and exciting, no?

I used Urban Decay’s Naked palette for my eyes. I bought this when it first came out. There was SO. MUCH. HYPE. around this palette, it was crazy. It started off a chain reaction: tons of different brands created their own version of a neutral palette. Urban Decay has since capitalized on the palette’s immense popularity and has since released Naked2, Naked3, Naked Basics, Naked2 Basics, and most recently, Naked Smoky. Whew!

I still only own the original Naked palette. I adored it when I first got it, and used it frequently. As time went on and my attention wandered, this got pushed to the back. I rarely use it now. The colors just don’t inspire me anymore. I’ve discovered other color combinations that flatter my skin tone better.

However, it’s nice to visit with old friends, right?

FOTD: Deep End

fotd deep end

Here’s another old-ish FOTD. I’m tempted to just do a pic dump of all my backlogged FOTD, honestly…

So far, all of my looks have been pretty natural/nude-tral on the eyes. A couple months ago, I dug out my Urban Decay 15th Anniversary Palette to play with. Lately I’ve been rediscovering it; there are lots of great colors! I just wish there were a few mattes in the mix. Every single color is shimmery, and while I loved it a few years ago when it was released, I have since improved my makeup skills and learned to appreciate a good matte color for adding dimension.

Oh boy. You can tell this is an old FOTD as a number of these products had already made their way into my empties pile before this post went up. Oops.

I do wish the blending on this could have been better. I worked at it too, but I couldn’t get rid of that line. Definitely not one of my favorite looks, but it was fun to play with color. Also, Urban Decay’s Solstice works SO WELL on top of so many different colors!
