FOTD: Panda Eyes

No clever product-name-as-post-title today. A couple weeks ago, I decided to do a full-on panda smokey eye, just for fun.

I very rarely line my waterline, as it makes my already tiny eyes look extra beady. But it does make my eyes look chocolate-y brown.

Also, I blended out the black with a bit of bronzer. This is a trick I picked up from Viola of Killer Colours. It prevents the black from blending out to a weird grayish blue, and instead makes the black look extra black.

I added some faux freckles to keep the vibe casual and a little undone.

Wearing a full-blown smokey eye like this definitely makes me feel sexy, so here is a gratuitous, try-hard model pose:

FOTD: Oh, Put It On

I’m still not on board with liquid lipsticks. Nevertheless, I had to pick up this one when I saw it at Target. It’s hard to find new color releases here.  So, fellow Hawaii makeup addicts, Target has quite an impressive selection of NYX products, including the new NYX Liquid Suede colors. ;)

Oh, Put It On is a deep, almost-black purple. I think it makes enough of a statement on its own, as all dark lips do, so here is my go-to pairing: almost nada on the eyes and face.

FOTD: Soft Grunge

fotd-soft-grunge-2

Remember how I said that I’m not very creative on my own, but can recreate tutorials with moderate success? Prime example coming right up!

This look was guided by the much better-looking and more talented Karima McKimmie:

I love grungy looks. The idea that you can look fierce while being a bit disheveled, a bit undone, a bit… un-pretty, is so up my alley.

That being said, I think my look, and by extension, Karima’s, are “pretty” interpretations on the grunge subculture. For a more accurate depiction, check out Sam of Pixiwoo’s tutorial:

I swear, Sam totally owns ANY look she ever attempts. She’s the ultimate badass.

Me, in comparison? I’m not so much grungy as I am just grubby. Womp womp.

fotd-soft-grunge

I did put eyeliner in the lower waterline, like Karima did. However, I have yet to find ANY pencil eyeliner that will stay in my waterline. So, by the time I finished my makeup and sat down to take pictures, it had slid off and gathered into little boogers at the corner of my eyes. So sexy.

Incidentally, I broke the lipstick. I twisted it the wrong way, and the bullet has separated from the mechanism that pushes it up. The only way to get it out now is to turn it upside down and shake it. Annoying!

FOTD: Halloween 2016

fotd-halloween-2016

So! It’s Halloween. I did a thing on my face.

This was my first time using water-activated face paint. I bought it at Target. I was surprised to see it’s made by WolfeFX cosmetics, a well-known theatre and stage makeup brand. It was only $2, so I figured it’d be a cheap experiment.

And, err… This happened. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be exactly. Some kind of sloppy broken doll look, maybe?

The Good

I do like how the tiny, doll-shaped lips turned out, though. Maybe a bit smaller on the lower lip would be better. Took a lot of finagling with a Stila liquid lipstick that I never use. I also found the face paint to be relatively easy to use, and blend.

The Bad

The red blush, however, refused to blend. I tried begging and pleading, even bribing. But once it went on, it refused to budge. Stubborn bugger. I also don’t like the sloppy line work for the cracks. I should have used a finer brush.

The Ugly

Dem brows, tho.

In all seriousness, I think the overall impact of this look would have improved had I bothered to do something with my hair. And maybe a neutral backdrop so you don’t have to see my living room behind me, ha. The white face paint should have continued down my neck as well; the floating head effect is quite distracting otherwise!

I’d like to try this again with my usual face color, and use the white face paint as an accent to make the cracks look more realistic. Also, more gray shading!

In conclusion, I know this isn’t the best Halloween makeup out there. It isn’t even the best that I could have done. But it was getting late and I was rushing to get it done so I could take pictures and wipe it all off before walking the dog this afternoon, ha.

If you’re at all curious what products I’ve used to create this weird thing on my face:

Face

Rouge Bunny Rouge Milk Aquarelle – Chestnut Milk Parfait (yep, I used foundation and then covered it up with white face paint. Superfluous step)
WolfeFX Water Activated Makeup – White
Sleek MakeUP Ultra Mattes v2 – Pillow Talk
e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black
NYX blush – Red
I Heart Makeup Blushing Hearts highlighter – Goddess of Faith

Brows

e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black

Eyes

e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black
Sleek MakeUP Ultra Mattes v2 – Noir, Thunder

Lips

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick – Beso

This is going up super late, at 8PM HST! It’ll be November 1st by the time anyone reads this. So: I hope you’ve all had a fun Halloween! I’m staying in tonight because I’m boring. Also, I have no similarly unemployed friends who could go out on a Monday night. But mostly, I’m boring.

FOTD: Embellishment

fotd embellishment

Yet another FOTD venturing into the world of liquid lipsticks. It’s a trend that I am not 100% behind. I only have three liquid lipsticks: two from NYX, and one from Stila. Honestly, I don’t really get the hype. They supposedly last forever (and yet, they don’t on me), and they have lots of cool and unusual colors. But they’re so drying and in my humble opinion, I don’t think the super matte lip is very flattering on anyone. You know, they kinda make your lips look like a butthole. :X

However, I will admit that there are unconventional colors that probably wouldn’t translate as well with a traditional bullet formula (like Stone Fox). The colors are really the only reason why I bothered to buy some, as I find them rather fiddly to apply as well.

fotd embellishment 2

The NYX Lip Lingerie line are basically nudes with a hint of 90’s grunge. There are quite a lot of brown and gray tones in the line, some of which would probably look awful on my skin tone. Embellishment isn’t the most flattering on me either. The strong purple gray tone is a little hard for me to pull off, and I have to carefully coordinate the other colors on my face to avoid looking dead and drained.

I used Makeup Geek’s Prom Night, a purple-y taupe, and blended it out with a few gray tones in the Viseart Neutral Matte palette. A touch of plummy brown on my cheeks pulls the look together.

I’m still not in love with Embellishment, nor the liquid lipstick trend. Neither the formula nor the color are “swipe on and go” friendly. Still, it’s a unique color that’s worth keeping around.
