FOTD: Changeling

I haven’t posted a makeup look in ages. In fact, I haven’t created one worth documenting in ages either. I did this waaaay back in April. Whoops.

This look started out with the intent of using TopShop Chameleon Glow Changeling, but the name of the shadow and its incredible color shift kind of took over and it evolved into this.

Aaaand I just realized that I never did post pics of that gorgeous eyeshadow! So, here you go:

TopShop Chameleon Glow Changeling

Looks mildly interesting in the pan. Reddish with a green shift. Okay, what makes it special?

Feast your eyes:

How pretty is this?? It has such a delicious, delicate iridescent sheen, and that color shift! I don’t have anything else like this in my stash. It is utterly unique.

FOTD: Soft Grunge

Remember how I said that I’m not very creative on my own, but can recreate tutorials with moderate success? Prime example coming right up!

This look was guided by the much better-looking and more talented Karima McKimmie:

I love grungy looks. The idea that you can look fierce while being a bit disheveled, a bit undone, a bit… un-pretty, is so up my alley.

That being said, I think my look, and by extension, Karima’s, are “pretty” interpretations on the grunge subculture. For a more accurate depiction, check out Sam of Pixiwoo’s tutorial:

I swear, Sam totally owns ANY look she ever attempts. She’s the ultimate badass.

Me, in comparison? I’m not so much grungy as I am just grubby. Womp womp.

I did put eyeliner in the lower waterline, like Karima did. However, I have yet to find ANY pencil eyeliner that will stay in my waterline. So, by the time I finished my makeup and sat down to take pictures, it had slid off and gathered into little boogers at the corner of my eyes. So sexy.

Incidentally, I broke the lipstick. I twisted it the wrong way, and the bullet has separated from the mechanism that pushes it up. The only way to get it out now is to turn it upside down and shake it. Annoying!

FOTD: Halloween 2016

So! It’s Halloween. I did a thing on my face.

This was my first time using water-activated face paint. I bought it at Target. I was surprised to see it’s made by WolfeFX cosmetics, a well-known theatre and stage makeup brand. It was only $2, so I figured it’d be a cheap experiment.

And, err… This happened. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be exactly. Some kind of sloppy broken doll look, maybe?

The Good

I do like how the tiny, doll-shaped lips turned out, though. Maybe a bit smaller on the lower lip would be better. Took a lot of finagling with a Stila liquid lipstick that I never use. I also found the face paint to be relatively easy to use, and blend.

The Bad

The red blush, however, refused to blend. I tried begging and pleading, even bribing. But once it went on, it refused to budge. Stubborn bugger. I also don’t like the sloppy line work for the cracks. I should have used a finer brush.

The Ugly

Dem brows, tho.

In all seriousness, I think the overall impact of this look would have improved had I bothered to do something with my hair. And maybe a neutral backdrop so you don’t have to see my living room behind me, ha. The white face paint should have continued down my neck as well; the floating head effect is quite distracting otherwise!

I’d like to try this again with my usual face color, and use the white face paint as an accent to make the cracks look more realistic. Also, more gray shading!

In conclusion, I know this isn’t the best Halloween makeup out there. It isn’t even the best that I could have done. But it was getting late and I was rushing to get it done so I could take pictures and wipe it all off before walking the dog this afternoon, ha.

If you’re at all curious what products I’ve used to create this weird thing on my face:

Rouge Bunny Rouge Milk Aquarelle – Chestnut Milk Parfait (yep, I used foundation and then covered it up with white face paint. Superfluous step)
WolfeFX Water Activated Makeup – White
Sleek MakeUP Ultra Mattes v2 – Pillow Talk
e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black
NYX blush – Red
I Heart Makeup Blushing Hearts highlighter – Goddess of Faith

e.l.f. cream eyeliner – Black

Sleek MakeUP Ultra Mattes v2 – Noir, Thunder

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick – Beso

This is going up super late, at 8PM HST! It’ll be November 1st by the time anyone reads this. So: I hope you’ve all had a fun Halloween! I’m staying in tonight because I’m boring. Also, I have no similarly unemployed friends who could go out on a Monday night. But mostly, I’m boring.

FOTD: Stone Fox

Another weird lipstick color! This one, I actually did get the guts to wear it out. I went to a short film showcase last week Friday and decided to just go for it. A few people commented on my choice of color, but I think the key to wearing bold colors with confidence is to literally forget about what you’re wearing. That’s my strategy anyway. Whether or not it actually looks good on me is up for debate, but I (perhaps mistakenly) find it flattering.

With such a striking color, I kept everything else very minimal for this FOTD: soft winged liner, barely there bronzer, blush, and highlight. I also added some cluster falsies to balance my face out.

Also, I took these pics on the day I wore two different colored eyebrow products for this post, so that’s why I look like this:

But I don’t think anyone could tell in real life. Or if they could, they were too polite to tell me, ha.

Lastly, I am leaving on a trip to South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong on Wednesday morning! I’m going to try to get a few posts scheduled before I leave. In the meantime, if you have any makeup or skincare recommendations for me to check out while I’m there (or anything else I should see, do, or eat), please let me know!

FOTD: Cabernet

fotd cabernet

I often gravitate towards colors of the opposite season we’re in, just to be contrary. Summertime calls for bronze tones, corals, and juicy brights. Well, give me dark, vampy reddish purple! There’s something refreshing about the “summer goth” trend.

Here I’ve paired a deep wine color with bronze lids. It’s a nice twist on the usual smoky eyes and/or winged eyeliner + vampy lips. Instead, I went with a haze of shimmer, and no visible liner. A rosy gold bronzer and a nude blush finish it all off!

Also, do I have any readers that used to watch The Nanny with Fran Drescher? Cabernet reminds of a joke that was in the show:

Skip ahead to 13:06 for the joke, or you could watch the whole thing for nostalgia’s sake!  Aww, damn. The video has been removed.

“Remember when I first moved here and you asked me where was the cabernet? And what did I say?”

“Next to Cabin B.”

I LOVED this show, and watched it regularly as a kid. No shame!
