February/March 2017 empties

Yay, empties!

In February, I only used up a mascara. I didn’t think it was worth writing an entire post on one item, so I grouped it in with March’s empties.

There was a lot this month, but I still have plenty to get through!

Makeup empties

Smashbox Studio Skin Foundation & Concealer sampler card – There was only enough product for a jawline swatch for color-matching purposes. None of the colors matched me. I’m not even remotely interested in learning more about this foundation or trying a larger sample. Sorry, Smashbox.

Soap & Glory Thick & Fast mascara – I finished this in February. I really like this mascara. It smudged a bit in the beginning, but as the formula dried out a bit, it became perfect. I’d consider repurchasing this. I’ve seen it at the Keeamoku Walgreens and Salt Lake Target, for any Oahu readers who are curious about the UK brand.

Innisfree Natural Oil Control paper – Picked this up in Korea over the summer. I had run out of my e.l.f. ones. These are pretty decent, and I like the dispenser. However, all blotting papers perform are more or less equal in my eyes, so I’ll just use whatever’s available.

Atelier Cologne Mandarine Glaciale – I really liked this fragrance. It was juicy and fresh. It’s spicier than the company’s other citrus offering, Orange Sanguine. I wouldn’t mind a mini of this one day. Here’s the Fragrantica page on Mandarine Glaciale.

Skincare empties

The Body Shop tea tree oil – I’ve been using this for years. Although I said I wouldn’t be including it in future empties, this was a jumbo size and it feels like a bigger accomplishment? Plus, I’m trying to get rid of as many extras and backups as possible before the big move. I still have way too much stuff.

Shea Terra Organics Rose Hips Black Soap Deep Pore Facial Wash (And the longest product name in the world goes to…) – I’ve had this bottle for years. It’s supposed to be a deep clean product: you slather it on your skin and let it sit for a few minutes before washing off. It did a good job of bringing any gunk in my pores to the surface, and it also worked well for any flakiness. However, when I say deep clean, I mean DEEP. My skin felt squeaky after this — too clean. It definitely strips everything off and I had to moisturize almost immediately after stepping out of the shower. The consistency of the product was weird too, kind of goopy and runny at the same time. I wouldn’t buy it again.

The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil – I love this makeup remover. It gets off every last bit of foundation, mascara, eyeliner, you name it. The only gripe I have with it is the packaging. The pump leaks, and it gets messy. I actually prefer the solid cleansing balm, because the results are the same but the product is neater. Still, I’d repurchase this if the balm happens to be sold out (which is why I bought this one in the first place).

Sephora waterproof eye makeup remover – This is a pretty standard bi-phase makeup remover. It does its job and doesn’t leave a film around the eyes.

The Body Shop Oils of Life Intensely Revitalizing Facial Oil – I really like this oil. This was a gratis when I was still working there. I’ve already bought another one. First, I spray a face mist, which helps this oil to spread better. Then, after it absorbs, I pat on some moisturizer.

Bodycare empties

This is kind of a creepy picture. I also used up a jumbo shower gel, and a body butter, both from The Body Shop. Not sure why I only decided to include this one? Whatever.

Nature Republic Real Squeeze Aloe Vera Peeling Foot Mask – The first time I used this, a lot of dead skin peeled off. It was both gross and satisfying. But the past few times I’ve used this, I didn’t get as much peeling. So, it was mostly gross but less satisfying. I want to try the Baby Foot one next.

What have you used up last month?

Red Lips District: Urban Decay Vice lipstick 714

I have such a brain block when it comes to trying to write this post. Red lipsticks may never go out of fashion, but my enthusiasm and energy for writing about them is certainly waning. Let’s just get straight to it.

This is Urban Decay Vice Lipstick 714. It’s a holdover shade from the Revolution + Gwen Stefani line. Incidentally, I recently saw this very shade on clearance at Nordstrom Rack for $9. *wink wink nudge nudge*

714 is a bright, intense red. To my eye, it leans a little orange, which is super flattering on my skin tone. Unlike the previous red I wrote about, Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick Legendary, I definitely feel like I need to dress up somewhat for this red. The day I wore this, I actually changed out of my sweat pants to walk my dog, because I thought the disparity between my face and my clothes would be too great otherwise.

The look

Instead of the predictable sharp winged liner, I opted for a soft bronze-y haze. The orange tones in the eyeshadow complement the warmth of the lipstick, don’t you think? I added some trio clusters to balance the eyes with the strong lips, and kept the rest of the face minimal.

This was my first time trying the new matte Vice formula, and I really think they knocked it out of the park! It’s comfortable to wear, and it stayed put throughout a meal with very minimum fading. I used a clear lip liner around the outside edges and didn’t experience any bleeding. If and when I ever run out of this lipstick sample, I may consider buying a full-size. I’m glad there is a long-wearing option for those of us who dislike liquid lipsticks!

FOTD: Grey and Night

I’m in my first full week of work after being unemployed for a year and a half! It’s taking me some time to get used to waking up early and doing things all day long (vs. waking up when it gets too bright in my room and watching Netflix for hours).

Unfortunately, this means I’ll have less time to do looks and prepare posts for the blog. Which kind of sucks because I’m finally seeing an increase in traffic after plodding away at this self-hosted thing for years. *womp womp*

Anyway, I wanted to give this Bourjois quad a go, even though I knew I probably wouldn’t like it much. I was right. Gray eyeshadow doesn’t particularly flatter my coloring. I don’t think it looks terrible, but overall the whole look is kinda meh.

Bourjois Glamour Look Kit (Superdrug GWP)

This was a gift with purchase at Superdrug when I bought a couple Bourjois foundations. Honestly, I had half a mind to tell them to just keep it, but I didn’t want to be rude. Luckily for me (and her, I hope!), my friend who has a completely different coloring, likes the way gray eyeshadows look on her, so I’ll be passing along this entire set to her.

Two backlogged FOTDs

I want to clear out my backlogged FOTDs so I can move onto the appalling amount of new stuff I’ve hauled recently. I blame FOMO.

Sheer Anarchy:

This lipstick was part of the Urban Decay Vice sampler card. It’s a pretty, flattering pink. However, it applies a bit patchy and it doesn’t last very long. However, it could be the nature of the little blister pack, and that it’s been slowly drying out for months.

Also, this is an ironic name for this FOTD, as there is nothing anarchist about it. In fact, it’s about as inoffensive as can be.

FOTD: Soft Grunge

fotd-soft-grunge-2

Remember how I said that I’m not very creative on my own, but can recreate tutorials with moderate success? Prime example coming right up!

This look was guided by the much better-looking and more talented Karima McKimmie:

I love grungy looks. The idea that you can look fierce while being a bit disheveled, a bit undone, a bit… un-pretty, is so up my alley.

That being said, I think my look, and by extension, Karima’s, are “pretty” interpretations on the grunge subculture. For a more accurate depiction, check out Sam of Pixiwoo’s tutorial:

I swear, Sam totally owns ANY look she ever attempts. She’s the ultimate badass.

Me, in comparison? I’m not so much grungy as I am just grubby. Womp womp.

fotd-soft-grunge

I did put eyeliner in the lower waterline, like Karima did. However, I have yet to find ANY pencil eyeliner that will stay in my waterline. So, by the time I finished my makeup and sat down to take pictures, it had slid off and gathered into little boogers at the corner of my eyes. So sexy.

Incidentally, I broke the lipstick. I twisted it the wrong way, and the bullet has separated from the mechanism that pushes it up. The only way to get it out now is to turn it upside down and shake it. Annoying!
