FOTD: Panda Eyes

No clever product-name-as-post-title today. A couple weeks ago, I decided to do a full-on panda smokey eye, just for fun.

I very rarely line my waterline, as it makes my already tiny eyes look extra beady. But it does make my eyes look chocolate-y brown.

Also, I blended out the black with a bit of bronzer. This is a trick I picked up from Viola of Killer Colours. It prevents the black from blending out to a weird grayish blue, and instead makes the black look extra black.

I added some faux freckles to keep the vibe casual and a little undone.

Wearing a full-blown smokey eye like this definitely makes me feel sexy, so here is a gratuitous, try-hard model pose:

Red Lips District: Urban Decay Vice lipstick 714

I have such a brain block when it comes to trying to write this post. Red lipsticks may never go out of fashion, but my enthusiasm and energy for writing about them is certainly waning. Let’s just get straight to it.

This is Urban Decay Vice Lipstick 714. It’s a holdover shade from the Revolution + Gwen Stefani line. Incidentally, I recently saw this very shade on clearance at Nordstrom Rack for $9. *wink wink nudge nudge*

714 is a bright, intense red. To my eye, it leans a little orange, which is super flattering on my skin tone. Unlike the previous red I wrote about, Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick Legendary, I definitely feel like I need to dress up somewhat for this red. The day I wore this, I actually changed out of my sweat pants to walk my dog, because I thought the disparity between my face and my clothes would be too great otherwise.

The look

Instead of the predictable sharp winged liner, I opted for a soft bronze-y haze. The orange tones in the eyeshadow complement the warmth of the lipstick, don’t you think? I added some trio clusters to balance the eyes with the strong lips, and kept the rest of the face minimal.

This was my first time trying the new matte Vice formula, and I really think they knocked it out of the park! It’s comfortable to wear, and it stayed put throughout a meal with very minimum fading. I used a clear lip liner around the outside edges and didn’t experience any bleeding. If and when I ever run out of this lipstick sample, I may consider buying a full-size. I’m glad there is a long-wearing option for those of us who dislike liquid lipsticks!

Red Lips District – Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick Legendary

smashbox be legendary lipstick legendary

My fever for hunting down all the red lipsticks has died down considerably. However, I received a deluxe sample of this Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick Legendary in a recent Sephora order. I still have a number of red lipsticks I haven’t featured on the blog yet, so here we go.

The lipstick bullet looks deceptively opaque. Imagine my surprise when it swatched quite sheerly. This swatch is several passes with the bullet. It builds up quite nicely. It has a slippy, almost lip balm texture.

I actually prefer the transparent quality, though! It makes it much easier to wear. The result is a casual, everyday red. It doesn’t wear you; you wear it. It’s the ultimate jeans-and-a-tshirt red lipstick.

On my face

I used a sample card of the Smashbox Studio Skin foundation and concealer. There was barely enough foundation to even do a color match. Incidentally, neither 1.1 nor 3.1 were a good match; even mixing the two gave me an iffy result. Since there was so little of it, I just spread it around very thinly and blended it with a beautyblender. The result is hyper-natural skin. It looks like I barely have foundation on, because I don’t.

The concealer samples were the same story: fair was way too light and pink, and light/medium was almost orange. Mixing the two was barely passable. Also, I noticed that the concealer sets almost immediately. I had a hard time blending it out.

Needless to say, the sample card was next to useless for me. None of the colors remotely matched me, and there was only enough product to maybe give me an idea of where I’d fall in their color spectrum. However, I’m on a renewed “use all the things!” kick, so I just wanted to use it up and throw it away.

January 2017 empties

It’s my first empties post of the year! Starting off strong, riding the high of determination to stick to my New Year’s resolutions. I made it a point to use up both deluxe sample sizes, and foil packets. Here’s what I managed to get rid of this past month.

Makeup empties

NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint in Groenland – This has surprising coverage for something called “skin tint.” It’s more like a medium-to-full coverage foundation. I didn’t like it very much on me. It clung to dry patches and made my skin look very flat. To compensate, I added copious amounts of highlighter. I’m wearing it in this FOTD here.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard – This had a lot of mixed reviews in the blogosphere. Some people found it too drying for the under eye area, and the finish too cakey or “makeup-y.” Other people love it and found it covers well and still looks natural. From what little trial and research I could do based off this tiny foil packet sample, I am one of the latter. I used to use the now discontinued dual pan concealer in Ginger/Custard, and I was pleased to see that this iteration of Custard still more or less matched me. I might consider purchasing this after I get through my army of concealers.

Urban Decay Vice lipstick in Sheer Anarchy – From the card sampler from Urban Decay, marketing their new Vice line of lipsticks. The blister pack is filled with a generous amount of lipstick; more than I can get through in a day. However, I’m not very diligent about reapplying. It took me several months to get through this tiny thing, mostly because it’s a pain in the ass to apply lipstick entirely with a brush, and even more of a pain in the ass to touch up throughout the day. This led to the formula slowly drying up and becoming tacky and sticky. Additionally, application was streaky.

Despite user frustration and laziness, I will say that the color is nice. I like bright pinks on me; they contrast nicely with my neutral leaning warm skin tone. Wearing it here.

Nordstrom retractable lip brush – It broke. I bought a very cute and tiny replacement one from MUJI. Thinking about splurging for this Chikuhodo one for my birthday. (I probably won’t do it. I’ve been unemployed for too long and am hoping to move halfway across the world. Now would be a good time to start being prudent, Jen.)

The Body Shop Smoky 2 in 1 Gel Liner in Brown – It’s dried up. I tried to revive it twice with Inglot’s Duraline, but it’s still not as creamy as it was when new. It was a great color, though. Deep chocolate brown with a matte finish. The cap includes a little brush, which was surprisingly very useful. If you can finish gel liners faster than I can, then I’d recommend taking a look at this one. It’s much darker and less red than the packaging would have you believe, though.

Red Lips District: Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon Napa Vineyard

burt's bees lip crayon napa vineyard

I bought this Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon Napa Vineyard about one, maybe two years ago. At the time, I was going through my “omg red lips tho” phase, and I even started a sporadic blog post series on them.

However, I am nothing if not inconsistent, and that’s why it took me two years to get around to writing a post on this product. Remember, I bought it specifically “for the blog.” Ugh. But whatever. Onwards!

Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon Napa Vineyard

Burt’s Bees is well-known for their “natural” lip balms. They came out with these “all-natural” lipsticks a couple years ago and since the swatches looked promising, I hunted this one down.

Napa Vineyard is a beautiful blue-based red. It’s very pigmented, quite unlike the famed tinted lip balms or lip shimmers. This lip crayon does not mess around. You want a dressed-up, I’m-going-to-an-event-because-I’m-a-grown-up red? This color will definitely fit the bill.

The formula is a bit on the dry side, however. The chubby crayon shape also doesn’t help much to create a sharp line, which I think is a must with such a bright, deep color. You have to go in with a lip brush. Alternatively, you could wear a lip balm underneath and pat this color on to achieve a less saturated stain.

I do like that it’s a twist-up crayon. However, the cap on mine, while cute with its honeycomb pattern, doesn’t stay on very well. In fact, I dropped it once and the cap popped off. The crayon hit the floor on the tip. Gross.
