Seeing as we’re already halfway through June, I’d better get these up now-ish.
This will most likely be rambly and boring, so feel free to click away. *shrugs*
e.l.f. Shine Eraser blotting papers – I could have sworn there used to be 50 sheets per pack, but now there are only 30?? As a result, I’m going through these faster than before. Also, now that it’s summer, I’ve been using 3 sheets a day.
Nature Republic Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Collagen Solution – I like these gel masks more than paper ones. They feel more substantial and soothing. I enjoyed this one and have one more that I need to use before I leave!
Jouer lip gloss in Sunset – Just tired of this one. I don’t use lip gloss much anymore, and I have no feelings one way or another about this.
Yes to Carrots Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 – It’s okay. I know there are better spf moisturizers out there, but I’m kinda cheap when it comes to skincare. Mostly because skincare ingredients etc. intimidate me.
The Body Shop Frosted Cranberry eau de toilette – It’s a sweet, one-note fragrance. I liked it, but I bought it only because I used to work there and needed to wear a company fragrance.
The Body Shop Moisture Foundation in 05 – FINALLY DONE WITH THIS MOTHERFUCKER. This foundation just wouldn’t die and I started to really resent it. It’s been discontinued, but I wouldn’t repurchase it if it were still being sold. It wore horribly throughout the day, looked greasy, and clung to dry patches. Blech.
The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector – HG status. I will forever repurchase this hand cream. Again, the scent is not for everyone, but it is the best hand cream for my perpetually thirsty paws.
It’s my first empties post of the year! Starting off strong, riding the high of determination to stick to my New Year’s resolutions. I made it a point to use up both deluxe sample sizes, and foil packets. Here’s what I managed to get rid of this past month.
NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint in Groenland – This has surprising coverage for something called “skin tint.” It’s more like a medium-to-full coverage foundation. I didn’t like it very much on me. It clung to dry patches and made my skin look very flat. To compensate, I added copious amounts of highlighter. I’m wearing it in this FOTD here.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard – This had a lot of mixed reviews in the blogosphere. Some people found it too drying for the under eye area, and the finish too cakey or “makeup-y.” Other people love it and found it covers well and still looks natural. From what little trial and research I could do based off this tiny foil packet sample, I am one of the latter. I used to use the now discontinued dual pan concealer in Ginger/Custard, and I was pleased to see that this iteration of Custard still more or less matched me. I might consider purchasing this after I get through my army of concealers.
Urban Decay Vice lipstick in Sheer Anarchy – From the card sampler from Urban Decay, marketing their new Vice line of lipsticks. The blister pack is filled with a generous amount of lipstick; more than I can get through in a day. However, I’m not very diligent about reapplying. It took me several months to get through this tiny thing, mostly because it’s a pain in the ass to apply lipstick entirely with a brush, and even more of a pain in the ass to touch up throughout the day. This led to the formula slowly drying up and becoming tacky and sticky. Additionally, application was streaky.
Despite user frustration and laziness, I will say that the color is nice. I like bright pinks on me; they contrast nicely with my neutral leaning warm skin tone. Wearing it here.
Nordstrom retractable lip brush – It broke. I bought a very cute and tiny replacement one from MUJI. Thinking about splurging for this Chikuhodo one for my birthday. (I probably won’t do it. I’ve been unemployed for too long and am hoping to move halfway across the world. Now would be a good time to start being prudent, Jen.)
The Body Shop Smoky 2 in 1 Gel Liner in Brown – It’s dried up. I tried to revive it twice with Inglot’s Duraline, but it’s still not as creamy as it was when new. It was a great color, though. Deep chocolate brown with a matte finish. The cap includes a little brush, which was surprisingly very useful. If you can finish gel liners faster than I can, then I’d recommend taking a look at this one. It’s much darker and less red than the packaging would have you believe, though.
I didn’t post my March empties in a timely manner, so I’m bundling it with April’s empties. Yay for consolidation!
Here are the things I managed to finish before leaving London.
Yes to Cucumbers Calming Night Cream – I have a hard time finding this in stores now! I only ever see the day creams. :(
Yes to Carrots Rich Moisture Day Cream – Nothing good or bad to say about this. It’s just okay. I don’t have sensitive skin so I can use pretty much anything.
Simple Micellar Cleansing Water – I used this to cleanse in the morning, and to take off light makeup. I really enjoyed this one, but it’s way more expensive in the States than in the UK. I bought a Garnier one instead. Neither are cruelty free, though. If anyone knows of one, please let me know!
Clean Eau de Parfum – It was a nice, but I don’t think I’ll buy a full size. As I get more into perfume, I like to try as many samples as I can, but also be as discerning as possible before buying a bottle.
Burt’s Bees Pumpkin Spice lip balm – This was limited edition, and I really enjoyed it. Not too waxy, nor too thin. I recently found one on clearance at Target for $1.64 so I bought it despite still having a number of lip balms to go through.
Now that we’re in a new year, I’m going to take that “starting fresh” feeling and run with it.
I’ve been doing an exhaustive inventory of all my crap this past week. I’m actually still not done with it, but I promise it’s not because I have that much stuff. It’s because I’m really lazy.
Basically, I’m taking stock of what I have, one category at a time. I did something similar back in 2013, and lo and behold, I still have the pictures from then. So I thought I’d do a comparison to see how well I did in two years, when I started my mission to downsize.
In the next few weeks, I’m going to be posting a lot of these inventory posts, which may or may not bore you to death. Again, feel free to skip over these.
Four and a half (the clear jar is a Frankenstein’d lip balm, where I melted the rest of almost used balms into one pot).
In my defense, it has been two years, and the only lip balms I still have from when I first took inventory are two Burt’s Bees.
Shiro Cosmetics tinted lip balm in A Girl and a Cat Shiro Cosmetics Intertubes in Why Not Zoidberg?
Pacifica Color Quench Lip Tint in Blood Orange
Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm in Red Dahlia Burt’s Bees lip balm in Vanilla Bean Burt’s Bees lip balm in Pumpkin Spice Burt’s Bees beeswax lip balm with vitamin E and peppermint Burt’s Bees lip shimmer in Fig
The Body Shop lip roll-on oil in Coconut The Body Shop Aloe lip care
Yes to lip butter in Berry Yes to lip balm in Pomegranate SPF 15
I recently bought the Shiro Cosmetics A Girl and a Cat one, in November. I also just picked up the Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean and Pumpkin Spice in a two-pack at Target a couple weeks ago. The Body Shop’s roll-on lip oil recently went on sale and I wanted to try it, but I’m not a big fan of it. Also, I finished the Burt’s Bees tinted one in Red Dahlia before I got around to posting this.
In any case, it’s safe to say that I can ban myself from buying more lip balm until I whittle this stash back down to 4-5.
I didn’t have lip scrubs two years ago, so these were recent-ish acquisitions.
I’m probably the only person in the world who gives a shit, but I stopped posting my empties after August. I did continue to take pictures of them, though. I just never got around to the writing and posting about it part.
Normally I’d just call it a day and give up, but since it’s the beginning of the year, I want to do a massive clean out of my makeup. Today, I started taking inventory. I’ll post them here, even though it’s not particularly interesting, and it’s more for my reference than anything else.
Feel free to completely pass over this post, though.
Yes to Carrots shampoo and conditioner – I didn’t like either of these. The shampoo didn’t feel like it cleansed my hair well enough, and my scalp would get greasy by the next day. The conditioner was just okay at detangling and moisturizing. I bought them because they were on sale at Target and the bottles are huge. I wouldn’t buy either of them again.
The Body Shop Shimmer Waves in 01 Bronze – I dropped this on the floor and all of the waves separated from the back of the plastic case. There isn’t even a metal pan. It’s quite a fragile palette. I’ve already bought a new one. It’s a very convenient, multi-use product for eyes and cheek and I leave it in my locker at work for days when I don’t have time to put on makeup before getting to the mall.
Shu Uemura eyelash curler – The holy grail, end-all, be-all of eyelash curlers. I’ve had mine for years and years and I only changed the pad once. I figured it was time to finally let it go. I can’t find Shu Uemura here easily, so I bought a replacement curler from Sonia Kashuk. It works fine.
The Body Shop smudger brush – I thought this would be useful somehow in getting the shimmer cubes’ pigment to show up, but it’s only slightly better than the sponge applicators that come pre-packaged in some drugstore eyeshadow palettes. I ended up using it as an applicator for Mod Podge until the sponge-y bits fell apart and crumbled too much.
Urban Decay Grindhouse pencil sharpener – I had two of these, and this one was getting old and cruddy.
Urban Decay cream eyeshadow in Mushroom – It dried out. It was such a nice color, though.
The Body Shop tea tree oil – This works just as well as the Peter Thomas Roth acne spot treatment I was using prior to this. The tea tree oil is a fraction of the price of the PTR one, and I stockpiled 6 of them during the latest Buy 3, Get 3 Free sale.
The Body Shop Vineyard Peach shower gel – I love the way this smells. It doesn’t smell too sweet and sugary, the way a lot of peach fragranced things can smell.
The Body Shop Extra Virgin Minerals cream compact foundation in 202 Natural Vanilla – I hated this foundation. It’s supposed to be cream to powder, but I found it greasy. It felt like it never blended into my face, and instead it just sat on top of my skin. Gross.
Seche Vite top coat – It started getting goopy about halfway through the bottle, and I already have a butter LONDON top coat ready to go, so out this went. I kept the bottle, though. I might use it as a mini flower vase.
Yes to Cucumbers night and day cream – I love these two creams. They’re lightweight, and they smell nice. Best of all, they come in a pump form. I don’t like face creams in tubs where I have to stick my grubby fingers in it to apply. My skin isn’t particularly sensitive to anything, but I just like the way this smells.
OPI Avo Juice hand and body cream in Holly Berry – My coworker gave me this as part of a Christmas gift last year (2013). It feels light and almost gel-like. Another coworker gave me the same exact hand cream in a different scent this past Christmas, ha.
Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation in Nude – This came as a sample in one of my Sephora orders. I thought it would have been a good color match, even though it was a pre-packaged sample, but it ended up being a little too dark and orange on me. I received two packets of these, so I gave the other one to my mom, who is slightly darker than I am.
The Body Shop Vitamin E cream cleanser – It’s okay. It’s creamy, and it doesn’t dry out my skin. I liked using it, especially now that it’s colder and drier. I probably wouldn’t purchase a full sized one, though.
Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe shampoo and conditioner – This was part of a trial size set I bought. The shampoo was sulfate-free, so it lacked the foaminess that traditional shampoos have. I didn’t mind, though. I felt it was just okay at cleansing. The conditioner was a bit watery, and it took quite a lot of product before my hair was detangled. My hair isn’t even that long nor prone to tangling! It had a nice coconut scent. I won’t purchase the full sized ones, though. Also, I’m not sure if it’s because both formulas do contain a bit of sea salt, but I felt like the colored portion of my hair at my nape faded quickly while using this.
Benefit They’re Real! mascara – I should have thrown this away months ago, but it was living in my makeup bag in my locker at work.
Pacifica Dreamy Youth Day and Night Face cream – I bought it as part of a “try me” set by Pacifica at Target. It was a decent face cream, and I used it mainly while traveling.
Korres Pear and Bergamot body butter – I LOVE THE WAY THIS SMELLS. Generally, I like most scents with bergamot. The texture was creamier and not as hardened as some of the body butters from The Body Shop, but it’s right up there with the best of them in terms of moisturizing power. I bought this at Ross, and I’m definitely not willing to pay full price ($22? something crazy like that) for this again, though.
The Body Shop Vineyard Peach body butter – Again, love this scent. I just repurchased this, because it was on sale for $10. I actually still have a bit of this left, in a mini container, and a sample pot in my purse as a hand cream.
The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector – I’ve already mentioned that this is my favorite hand cream in the world. I just wish they’d change the packaging. The metal tube SUCKS. Towards the end, I always manage to puncture a hole in it somewhere.
The Body Shop Vitamin E Cool BB Cream – I like this. It does actually feel cool when it goes on, and it subtly evens out my skin tone and imparts a glow. However, it does make me shiny halfway through the day. During the 5 weeks I had off from work due to renovations, this sat and ended up separating, so I threw it out.
The Body Shop Home Fragrance Oil in Satsuma – Love love love this scent. I love it by itself, and I love to mix it with Exotic, Cranberry, and Strawberry. I bought an extra 3 because I use so much of it compared to the other scents I have.
Korean brand apple lip balm – The packaging is so cute. I’m going to keep it and use it for my leftover, Frankenstein’d lip balms.
The Body Shop Colour Crush eyeshadow in 510 Something Blue – I dropped it and it shattered all over the floor. Oh well. I barely used it, anyway.
